The one that pierced through the other was probably shot from a gun that was aimed at someone who was carrying an ammo box.
I doubt an ammo box; that would’ve destroyed the piercing bullet. But you’re right, if it’s true at all it would’ve had to have hit a stationary bullet.

You'd have to take into account that, back then in Europe, ammo boxes were made out of pine wood (soft, light, and cheap).
A bullet as shown in the pic could easily pierce through such an ammo box.
This makes more sense.
In order for one bullet to peirce another mid flight.. I think you would need vastly different technologies at play.
