Currently getting screwed, can't wait for the ice to start building up. Last time it took out power for a few days and the trees were falling all around. It sounded like cannon fire for a couple of hours.
In my area of Maine we had "The Ice Storm of '98" that caused unreal devastation. Trees and branches were snapping off for days. Days after the storm, the iced trees would start to melt, flow to the ends of branches and refreeze, causing more branches to snap. My area was without power for 13 days, other areas much longer. I still have a couple of birch trees in the yard that retained their bent over shape from that storm.
Good luck and make sure your generator is ready! I drove around video taping the local damage, it was like nothing I'd ever seen before.
I don't really need electricity, my house is heated with a woodstove and I've got an oil lamp plus candles. Most of my food is either dried or canned so it won't really be a big deal if the fridge dies. I'll just have to gather my elderly neighbors if the power does go out, their heat doesn't work without it.
Need power to post on POAL! Lol! Glad to hear you are in good shape to weather the storm, and looking out for your elderly neighbors. I bought a 250ft roll of 12-2 and ran it through the culvert under the road to my neighbor's house so they could benefit from my generator. I even measured their VDC at their end and at the generator to make sure they were getting nearly 120V and my supply at the generator did not exceed 125V and blow my appliances.
It's a natural disaster for sure but "It's pretty in a way to see everything covered in ice." If you were prepared then, you'll be okay now, but people nowadays are much dumber.
It was incredibly beautiful seeing everything glazed in ¼" or more ice with the sun glistening off it all .... but was devastating to see so many of the majestic old trees severely damaged and mortally wounded. We stacked about 6 cord of cut/split hardwood just from cleaning up the yard (1.7ac).
