Also, they were extremely selective on what jobs/duties you could do. It required not just physically being able to do them but mentally. It was entirely merit based in almost every way. Work hard, succeed.

I'm sure having nice tits didn't hurt either.

Frankly, it's better than what we are headed towards...

The only part that might be debatable is the service portion. They say in the movie that service guarantees citizenship. This implies that the pathway otherwise is pretty damn difficult. You also cannot have children without it.

I 100% agree with this, mind you, but it does shine a slightly different light on the military service as a whole in their universe

Problems with the cinematic version of the story:

Women shouldn’t be in the military.

Global government is bad because it puts all races under one government.

Fornication should be a prison offense.

Having no welfare system would solve the birth control problem better than military service. Only produce the kids you can support.

Other than those, I’d like to know more.

It is hard to make people hate a better system than the one they live in

  1. Heinlein was much more pro-military than you'd imagine if you've only watched the movie.
  2. Federal Service was the path to citizenship, of which military service was one option.
  3. The character Dizzy is male in the book.

I've read the book, and I often recommend it to people. The movie has done a great job of minimizing the chances of anyone taking that seriously.
