I always thought a rail would make an excellent bumper

Great for crashes but in reality a lot of weight to dangle at the far ends of a vehicle. Every start the nose will rise dramatically, ever stop it will dive dramatically. If the truck has air shocks all around, it might eliminate a lot of that. Also, a bumper that doesn't crush will transfer that unspent energy into the rest of the vehicle.
