He was going to buy out a grocery store in a area like that.. The apes found out and flocked to the store to get him to buy everything they could touch and he could not go due not just to security problems but because of their greed. Now, they won't admit that but that is what I imagine happened.

He keeps going to 3rd world countries to "help" them with eye surgery, water, etc.. There are plenty of places in the US he could do that would be the same thing. Not many people realize how much of the US had highly underdeveloped areas in poverty.
