As someone who went through watching peers take out student loans, these people are definitely victims. But they're victims of big education and liberals. Getting out of high school in the early 00s, *everyone* told you to go to college and you'd get a six figure salary right after graduation. Even the people who were skeptical of the whole thing were outcast and criticized. It was basically "take the loan, you'll pay it off really quickly, you'll be making $150,000 after you graduate! It makes sense to take out this $100,000 loan! It'll be so easy to pay back!" Parents were constantly thinking the student loans were a way for people who couldn't afford college to move into the next social and economic bracket if they couldn't afford $100k to send their kid to college.
