Splinters yes. The best part of those playgrounds is when they had the suspended bridge with wooden slats. We'd take turns climbing up the highest part to jump down onto one side of the bridge, which would fucking launch your friend standing on the other side of the bridge.

I must also mention the metal slides. The burns and bare skin sticking to it taught you great life lessons like: don't be a bitch; don't sit there crying, get the fuck out of the way because you're holding up the line. Also, they were very fast if your body was only making contact with the slide through your clothes.

I think removing these kinds of playgrounds were instrumental in making each new generation weaker than the last.

We had one of those treated pine playgrounds when I was in primary school. One kid in my class climbed onto the roof, then slid down it (palms and belly to the splinters) and fell to the ground. He got cut up pretty bad, but was otherwise fine. Nice guy, but not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
