Yes, but it could have been much worse.

I was about 5 years old when our village was surrounded and locked down by Yugoslav army, but luckily we already got a few anti-tank cannons delivered that blocked off the main entry routes to the village so tanks couldn't get in, the mountain terrain did the rest. Soon we also had army move in to protect us, but a small group.

Infantry tried to come in through the forest at nigh so for a few weeks there were lots of shooting and mortar fire pretty close to my home.

It ended when the flight moved more inland, but there were constant flyovers by jets and choppers so we often had to hide in basement until it was done, but luckily they never attacked us.

Croatia went through all that to leave Yugoslavia only to end up joining the EU. Sad.
