I know it's nigger culture, but I don't think being 5 min late to a job where it doesn't make a difference is bad. I don't really buy the whole "it shows you don't care about your job" schtick.

i would agree - i read it this way: if you are the kind of employee that commands this latitude, you're also most likely the kind of employee that will do a working lunch or stay the time after to offset. in all honesty though, the gigs i find myself in, i typically have this latitude after I've proven my mettle (or am given the latitude and expected to flex it), but i can relate to the attitude the meme conveys,

When I take over departments I fire them. You have to change the culture. Yes it means my managers and I have to work harder but it pays off in the end.

I think if the attitude becomes the norm, the employee is on their way out anyways. There are those however, that keep rolling the dice thinking the status quo will always remain - similar to govie and academic tenure. That said, you're right and I agree, the culture has to change but it's a two-way street and the onus is on the company.

I see a lot where people have worked for so long under bad management they have no regard for policy. If I'm lucky, once they see some is actually serious, they will comply. They were just used to doing whatever they want.
