Since votes aren't counted anymore, why would the public's opinion about anything influence U.S. law or lawmakers?

This has been obvious for a long time. Taxpayers no longer have any representation. We should not be taxed. The government actually doesn't need taxpayer money because they create all the currency they want. Thus the solution: disband the fed. Go back to a gold backed currency. Then the government would actually need tax payments from us deplorables. However, the criminals won't allow central banks to be disbanded.
