Someone else wrote this on poal a while ago, and it may even have been you.
I didn't save the link to the comment, but I copied the comment:
Why stop at food and water then? How about shelter? That's pretty important for survival, I suppose. Heating is a high priority, too, depending on the climate we're living in. Clothing, because freezing to death without it. Electricity, because none of our stuff works without it. Oh and transportation, of some kind, because sitting in the apartment like a chump isn't humane. And some basic education, because that's not good for anyone if people stay uneducated. And don't give everyone the bad, cheap stuff - healthy food and sustainable production is important, and so is fair trade and minimum wages.
You see that the list of things required for meaningful human life is long.
Oh and because we care for each other's health, we make smoking and drinking taxable, because that costs the health system money.
Oh and the next election, we let the people decide if the aforementioned government priorities are priced high enough or if there should be a modest increase in social services. Only a little, I promise, vote for me.
Which leads us exactly where we are now. This is how we got here. Through a thousand little votes and a thousand merciful decisions and appeals to our social consciousness. And if we succeeded, people from outside the country flooded into it to participate in the excellent conditions of living, until any and all well-intentioned services are dead and sucked up, the taxes sky high and a million regulations in place to stop everyone from abusing the system even more.
And no, repeating that mistake will lead us exactly to the same situation.
That's why the fucking government must absolutely do as little as possible - defend the border, enforce legal contracts, keep people from killing and robbing each other, disband monopolies and provide a legal framework and enforcement so people aren't depriving each other of their rights.
That wasn't me but great comment. It really expands on the thought.
