... I think the bone structures between turtles and tortoises are rather different.

For one, tortoises are land animals, are "dome shaped" and have stubby feet, while turtles are aquatic animals, somewhat flat as to be more hydro-dynamic and have fin-like or webbed feet.

Edit: It also depends whenever it is a sea turtle or a river/pond turtle.
