Scientific progresss is like trying to go very high speeds in a car (or travel at the speed of light) the further you progress the more energy, money and time it takes to go further/faster and w/ less reward. You will never reach the end but you can try and try forever. Not saying there is no progress to be had but people who think that science will solve all of humanities problems are fools.
