i live in a small town in australia without any industry. just has all the basics.. butcher, baker, general store, mechanic, surrounding houses, some have sheep, further out some people have cattle. it's a pretty simple formula for a nice life. the difference is violence. nobody here's going to randomly attack someone or steal from someone.
