The campaign to get rid of the incandescent light bulb was one of the biggest rip-offs of the public by government we've ever seen. It was completely unnecessary, and imposed a huge cost burden on the peoples of the nations involved. I used to be able to buy a lightbulb for twenty-five cents. They sometimes burned out after a few weeks, but they were so cheap I didn't care. Then the incandescent lightbulbs were banned. We got stuck with halogens, which will start fires in confined spaces due to their intense heat; with compact fluorescents, which contain toxic mercury and are supposed to be disposed of wearing a hazmat suit; and light emitting diodes, which don't work with dimmer switches and which are prone to flickering, because they are "delicate" and not suitable for rough environments. All of these new options cost anywhere from ten times to fifty times more than the incandescent bulbs, which do work in dimmer switches, which are not so hot they cause fires, which don't flicker, which stand up to rough use, and are not toxic to dispose of. Also, you people may have noticed that the new lightbulbs do not last longer than the old lightbulbs. This was a lie pushed by the governments and media when they were introduced. My experience is that the LEDs burn out more quickly than incandescents. Compact fluorescents probably last longer, but they are so hellishly expensive I never buy them. Halogens seem to last about the same length of time as incandescents.
