Certainly explains why Fishburne skipped it. It looked to me like Reeves had a "why the fuck am I doing this to myself" expression throughout the movie, but I could have been projecting. If you wrote a script specifically to destroy the legacy and themes of the original trilogy, it would be exactly this.
