The Borg got retconned into Zefram Cochrane's era in "First Contact" because it's modern Star Trek so it has to be completely fucked by time travel.
Here's a great story idea for free for those dipshits at Paramount: The events in "First Contact" led to the USS Botany Bay being assimilated by the Borg, and that leads to the battle of Wolf359 being led on the Borg side by a Locutus who was formerly Khan Noonian Singh. That leads to the eventual loss and assimilation of the entire Federation in this dark alternate version of The Next Generation.
