Much easier in the mid 90s that's for sure. It has been so long, but I think I just used a 3.5" disk with an autoexec.bat and config.sys file, then the whole machine was mine.

You'd also need the DOS executable (command.com) on there. And perhaps DOS/4GW.
Oh, and io.sys and msdos.sys if using MS-DOS.

only need dos/4[g][w] for certain programs using extended memory (which of course the pc had to actually have)
actually, autoexe.bat and config.sys weren't even truly necessary to run DOS, but they sure made it easier.
