Uh... I know many of you will hate me for this comment, but wasn't the snake right?
In the Adam and Eve story, "God" wanted to keep naked boys and girls a naked boy and girl in paradise. All of their desires fulfilled. All of their needs cared for. The snake offered the fruit of the tree of knowledge.
How is realizing that you are being kept naked in a garden of earthly delights as a prisoner (remember those fiery swords that prevented your leaving Eden) a bad thing?
This is the root question of all 3 Abrahamic religions. It's a jew question. Islam means "submission". Christianity means letting people fuck you over and forgiving them....loving them.

Also...aren't we talking about the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil? Isn't Knowledge of these important concepts important? I believe there is a rather spooky line in the bible about "becoming like Us" as well. Very strange stuff.
