It's the mind destroyer.

One could also call it the spirit destroyer, which is even more tragic.

Sure if we're talking about it in a metaphysical context. It is medically a mind destroyer so that's more apt in general conversation.

I don't mean spirit in the metaphysical woowoo sense. We're (as a society) very out of touch with the concept of our spirit but think about terms like "having a spirited discussion" or "being in high spirits" - it means something very practical and real.

It's the thing that drives you out of bed in the morning to challenge the day. It's the feeling that drives you to work hard, or create, or better yourself. It's the visceral sense of depth and awe you have when you experience a work of art that came from your own people and culture. It's what drives you to meet that beautiful woman or put yourself at risk or through pain to protect and support your family. It's the fire in you that propels you towards excellence. It's concrete and real in a human and physical way.

I'm not disagreeing at all and you're right that mind destroyer is easier without this context, I just thought it's important enough to mention this aspect of how it hurts you.
