I never thought I would be rooting for the Taliban, but the US military and government more generally has disconnected itself with the people that much. In fact it shouldn't be a surprise that they ended up fighting us. We funded people to fight communism. And that's exactly what they've done since. In the earlier democratic period they were largely a response to democracy giving a foothold for communists (as there was then a communist party, which pissed them off). They've been fighting the pipeline to communism ever since, of which democracy is one of the pathways. It at minimum is a pathway to partial communism which is unacceptable to them because they are pretty fucking anti-communist. Anything with the slightest hint of it they kill, and likely mortar any town with it in it. In fact, if you really wanted to defeat the Taliban you would take the wind out of their sails by fighting against communism yourself.
