If any of you have read Jung, you might be familiar with the theory that God, or the universe, is an unconscious being attempting to experience consciousness through our existence. It may be argued that the universe wants to prove that it exists, as without a conscious subject to witness it, it may as well not be real.

In other words, the universe is constantly pushing life into a struggle for survival. Existence is, by its very nature, violence and rebellion.
