Don't know if he had a wife
He did. She left him for another man about 3/4s of the way into his life's destruction. That actually was close to, if not, the last straw for him. That's when "god spoke to him" and he began working on the machine.
No kids that I'm aware of.
He was a man with nothing left to lose except his life, and nothing to gain except vengeance against his enemies. What he did- all noise and no fury. Gave those people who victimized him huge insurance payouts, probably got them all put on the best prescription drugs for "PTSD" or whatever. If anything, his actions with the dozer IMPROVED THE LIVES OF THE PEOPLE WHO SET OUT TO DESTROY HIM.
That is humiliating. Fuck the moral high ground. This is a major problem with "conservative" or "right-leaning" types: we love our moral high ground. We spent the last 4 years watching the other side riot non-stop in our country over every little fucking thing. And what'd we do? We laughed at them- "Look at them burning down their own cities, we're so much better than them."
And how did this turn out? Well, the side who spent four years using FORCE, INTIMIDATION, AND VIOLENCE got everything they fucking wanted. And here we are on the "moral high ground", still paying taxes and feeding and housing and clothing and paying for the smartphones of the freaks out there rioting.
There comes a moment where one must abandon the "moral high ground". For Marvin, he reached that moment- but he just wasn't a killer. Most people aren't. Here's a fascinating video about shooting to kill (in a military context, but I believe the concepts would apply to civilians as well): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zViyZGmBhvs&t=3s
