There's a lot of confusion between Satan and Lucifer. To most Christians, they are the same thing. But many groups, such as the Theosophical Society, the Lucis Trust, and other occult organizations make a distinction between the two. They see Lucifer as the Light-Bringer and equate him with Prometheus of Greek mythology, who brought fire to mankind and was punished for it. To the Gnostics, the Light-Bringer (Lucifer) is Jesus Christ, who brought the wisdom of gnosis to mankind and liberated our race from its thrall of ignorance and fear. According to this viewpoint, Lucifer didn't hate mankind, he sacrificed himself for mankind.
Lucifer and satan are titles, not names; so who knows who is who. Maybe we should call him gadreel, like in the Book of Enoch.
