True. We grew a huge garden and grandma canned stuff all summer. Our business was two miles away and when the roads became impassible due to snow grandpa said, "We'll walk." Turned out it's only one mile across the snow covered fields. We adapt, we overcome.

Sounds like your grandmother was a wise hardworking woman that had experienced like mine the depression and then got smart, harder working and frugal and learned that you need something you work for it or make it yourself and if you can't then you buy the tools if needed and learn to do the stuff necessary to not die in a back to the wall situation.
My grandparents were strong and did that stuff also and worked even in their 50's harder and faster than the kids in their 20's or 30's could never work since they didn't have that decades of working muscle and just never quit character.
