I see no intelligence in that cartoon anywhere so ....

The guy is trying to simulate the conditions of the early earth where life first appeared, which is going to take a lot of work considering how much the world has changed since those times, he also has to keep the space closed in order to maintain these conditions, as a ot of the elements that are now common were scarce back then and could have negative effects in the process of abiogenesis (for example, how our levels of oxygen could aserve to corrode the primitive crystals that produce the first replicating forms), not to mention how they would invalidate his results (the hypothesis is how the early earth produced life from non-living materials, after all).

So yeah, all that shit he's got is needed.
