Atheist here, Sadly, this is true of so many. The most well known is the normie atheists, like the normie christians they fall into cultural marxism, and that comes with consumerism and the hedonic treadmill (going nowhere, trying to chase happiness). But Let me be clear here, for the right wing atheists, what happens is the following:
We start trying to figure the world out and change it for the better, after all, what better way is there to live a meaningful life than to at least contribute to improving things in some way?
This, combined with an actual understanding of the scientific epistemology, and an iron-hearted commitment to it, leads us to /pol/ mentality more and more over time, deeper and deeper we go, lots of us need to hide the power levels, and that's where the "centrist/conservative/libertarian" community provides cover for us.
We get disheartened, our hope breaks, or our lives become miserable, we feel intimidated by just what it would take to solve the problems we thought we could fix, etc, you all know what happens when you see just how epically fucked everything is, and it's only getting worse, the worst part of it is that we, the aware ones, lack the ability to even try to organize a pushback.
We then seek relief from the fatigue, frustration, and emotional burnout, said relief usually comes in one of the more material comforts, like delicious food, or a fun video game, or getting lost in some fantasy where everything isn't so bad, for the worst cases, some of us even find comfort in porn or easily accessible sex with low quality partners.
We go to sleep and dream, when the horrors of reality are too much to deal with, it's an escape.
Spot on
