Cool! That sounds awesome. Childhood should have adventure and exploring in it (safely), I think kids today miss out on those experiences. The positive outlook I have came from my grandmother - she was the oldest of 8 and it was her who told me they would care for each other. She learnt how to cook from a young age and I think just generally grew up and was a responsible person because of it. I hope to have a big family one day, I think it's also cheaper than people think to have a lot of children (the dreaded hand-me-downs!).
