True, but Jim Caviezel did such a great job portraying him, based on IRL faith. While getting ribs cracked, almost dying of enlarged heart from pneumonia, and getting struck by lightning during filming. He is part Slavak so imagine that Mel was playing to stereotype in casting him as darker. Sadly, Passion might not have had the worldwide appeal to be one of most viewed ever if had been accurate.
