I would think it's because the other people do more things which cause increase of death risk. Sitting around eating doesn't do Much besides put strain on the body, and it's gradual so the body is the master of adaptation.
I also think as we age a little fat is better than low body fat percentage. The thin elderly I know are very frail and break bones all the time.
