Nationalism isn’t really an ideology so much as a necessity. People forget this in time periods when it’s not necessary, but are quickly reminded when times of strife arrive. It’s just collectivist tribalism, and when someone or something is threatening the well being of your family and the family of your neighbour you and your neighbour will quickly learn that whatever divides you pales in significance to that which bonds you - your shared nation that has come under attack.
