I've given this some thought--please don't boo too loud: red-heads and Irish were the most marginalized white race in England/U.S. and even now get "ginger" stuff; their characters were marginal and to a certain extent were the diversity of their day--so, updating the character but maintaining the role of that character and WALA good ole niggers replacing the "white nigger" [Irish].
