I know people say that these children's stories were meant to teach children about the hard cruel world, but it was never presented that way. I remember the dissonance I felt as a child with people telling me how great these are for kids, acting all happy and cheerful while Bambi's mom got shot, or having a 3d book of Thumbelina being kidnapped and held hostage by an ugly mole, the implication of her being raped by him. I still feel it causes trauma and fear, not fun happy feelings. It only fed my confusion about the world and how to function in it.

Now imagine a child watching Rick and Morty. Do it.

It's just fun and games bro!

I've never made it through an entire episode but am aware of the subject matter. South Park years before them. I suppose their argument is that those shows aren't intended for children, as if they won't watch them anyway. I remember when South Park first came out seeing their characters on infant and toddler sized clothes, because Sadam Husein butt-fucking satan is what every young child should grow up seeing.

Don't get me wrong, as an adult I found South Park's satire amusing, but no way to keep it as adult entertainment. I don't see an answer now that the internet makes all things available. Even if you don't let your kid watch them in your home all their friends talk about it, have cell phones and access to streaming and youtube. You'd have to lock them in a cage in the basement to control it all.

Grimm indeed. Those stories had less legend and more warning in them.

Inside out for anyone who has never seen a knit piece of clothing turned inside out.
