Pre 1964 us coins are the best since a dime is small, hard to counterfeit, very recognizable. War nickels are low premium, very durable, and small denomination too, less recognized but silver nonetheless. In a scenario you describe, it will serve it's purpose and you don't have to give away the farm to get something essential but ultimately not as valuable as your lowest fraction of pm.
