They had bad problems in the 80s. GM just made crap, Ford had a lot of issues with electrical and whatnot, and Chrysler had traded their in-house junk for mix-n-match K platform cars built from multiple vendors, while making the only smart move they had - buying AMC to get what was left of WIllys-Overland, aka The Jeep.
