Sure one still can say "fuck it at this point what difference does that even make?" and do nothing about borders, and yes it's going to come at a political cost because it's only going to render shit worse for obvious reasons. You'll have those with a contained level of infection, and those overrun by hundreds of thousands of infected niggers

The longer the borders are left open, the less likely there is to be any gain in closing borders.
If there's no gain to closing borders, then international trade continues without serious interruption.
Of course there's a gain in closing borders, since you can get the corona more than once, you can get it again right after getting diagnosed clean, you don't want to load hordes of infected leeches after hordes of infected leeches, especially when hospitals are overloaded
