This is an excellent animation about what is happening inside of a lock, great animation AND it lists all of the proper names of the component parts of a lock. You now know what a pin is, a plug and a keyway.

When you go to pick a lock the first thing that you do is use a tension wrench to rotate the plug, this puts pressure on the pins and when you push the right pin it will hit the shear line and get stuck on the edge (just like when you put a key in). Then you just have to pick the other pins in the same way and you will get an open.

I'm starting off with the videos that I think that you beginners will want to watch but if any of you want to start working on harder locks with security pins let me know and I will make a post.

The part about the Master key was interesting.

If you own a company with employees who only have access to their workspaces but (as the owner of the company) want to access those spaces yourself a master key is critical.

For locksport not so much, one shearline is as good as another.
