Just kidding, a shotgun is a better way. That being said, one of the most important things that I have learned are which locks are easy to pick and which locks are hard.

To start of with, whatever is the most popular type of lock in your region you want to replace the piece of shit immediately, criminals always practice hardest with the most common lock (God help you if you have a Kwikset!). When we just recently moved into our new house my new knowledge informed me about what locks I should put on my doors, I chose a Spanish company's locks (one that gave me a bunch of trouble for 3 months to get open and which is very uncommon where I live) instead of the domestic locks that were already installed on the doors that protect my Family and my stuff from the outside world. Just before I typed this I picked one of those locks in under 3 minutes. That particular lock was on my garage door when we moved in.

Also, with my knowledge of how locks work I was able to work with my locksmith to get all of my locks keyed to the same key. Yes they can do that and you will understand how as you learn more about locks. Now instead of 6 keys for my house I have one.

Learning about locks is not just fun, it is a survival skill; we place so much trust into something that we don't even understand and we blindly trust our safety to that thing which is a mystery.

If you all knew the things about locks that I know you would be very afraid.

So I used to buy these dead bolts with a button at the bottom that once pushed you couldn't unlock it even if you had the key. How hard would those be to pick?
