After my XBOX died and ever since I bought it, I used Kodi on a 2010 vintage Asrock ION 330 HT Intel Atom w/ integrated Nvidia ION graphics. Went through various versions of Ubuntu and Kodi updates, learned to always create an image before updating... :)

Now that 19.5 has gotten a little long in the tooth and since I'm currently on vacation, I decided to update. Turns out, the PPA installation only goes up to 20.2 because the PPA repo is not kept current since then. New versions come as flatpak.

20.2 had pretty high CPU usage for some reason with the Kodi process. Did not investigate and decided to try the flatpak.

I was kind of wary of this, didn't want to update Ubuntu to 22.04 or even 24.04 because on this old hardware I have problems with newer Nvidia drivers and newer versions of LIRC. There's usually manual work to do after the installation and it's not guaranteed that the new system will even work with the old components.

Since I had created two images, one with Acronis and one with Macrium, I decided to take the plunge. Used this guide: https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2024/04/kodi-21-omega-released-install/ To my surprise, it worked flawlessly and the old installation is still usable.

Copying database and settings: https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=377279

Change to the flatpak database directory. cd ~/.var/app/tv.kodi.Kodi/data/userdata/Database/

Forcibly remove the subdirectories of the flatpak Database database directory and their contents. \rm -rf *

Then you can copy the content of you current Kodi directory (~/.kodi/) into the Flatpak directory (~/.var/app/tv.kodi.Kodi/data/). cp -r ~/.kodi/* ~/.var/app/tv.kodi.Kodi/data/

Create an autostart entry for the flatpak: flatpak run tv.kodi.Kodi

First impressions: Runs pretty smoothly, CPU usage is way down, under 10% in system info when not doing anything obvious. All settings, database and addons are there.

Good question and one I haven't been able to answer.

I used various addons for years and it turned out that 'free' content got fewer and more far inbetween while paid content increased.

One day I decided it was time to bite the bullet, face reality and try <asterisk>Debrid. Worked out, would recommend.
