Exactly. Ever since as a kid I always kept asking "well, if he was this super duper evil worse-than-satan guy, then why the hell did the German people be on board with him?", and every time I'd get this drooly, beady-eyed non-response that basically amounted to either "they were duped/stupid/desperate!" or "he pretended to be good and then showed his true colors!", etc.
