At one time, we all thought we knew why planes stayed in the air. Faster-moving air is less dense than slower-moving air, and when the air moves over the curved upper surface of a wing, it moves faster, becomes less-dense, and the plane is pushed up by air pressure from below the wing.
Then we learned that this theory was complete hogwash. That's where we are today.
