I appreciate the idea that the sacrifice might have changed with time. That's compelling actually. Sacrificing kids to the devil today is putting them out there to be ritually sexualized and 'consumed' like sacrificial meat across the airwaves, in a kind of metaphorical fire of evil pedophilic lust.
That said, Canaanites definitely threw kids into literal fire as a sacrifice to Moloch. Go read up on the scholarly research into these practices. It's pretty horrific. They were often accompanied by large drum sections just to drown out the sounds of the screaming children. The Phoenicians also did this, and evidence was found of the practice in Carthage. I can't remember how the names of the deities changes, i.e. which worshipped Moloch and which worshipped Baal or if those names were cognates for the same thing.
