Where does the 6% number come from? Average life expectancy is about 80 years, so should it not be closer to 50%?

(The average life expectancy of ~74 years only counts those that die of "natural causes", not accidents, war or gas chambers)

That's the percent of people who are that age right now, that's not how many percent of the population that reaches that age.
The median age of death is around 70-80, meaning that 50% of the population reaches that age.
