I had a similar experience with gypsies. It boiled down to being taught and rewarded for being thieves. With jews it tends to be that they stay within the 'rules' while breaking the spirit of them as much as possible in their favor.

It turns out there's a whole industry devoted to finding new and interesting ways for them to break their own religious laws and 'outsmart' God. It's basically part of their religion to be shitty people.
