I read that article and I still don't know what a cracker is

Little tubes wrapped in paper. When pulled apart, they made a cracking sound which was satisfying, like stepping on ice in the springtime and having it crack under your feet. Once opened, it revealed a printed joke on a piece of paper and usually a small random item that was your gift (a pen, nail cutters, a little flash light....just little things). A party host would pass these out and then everyone got to hear the cracking, read off their joke and collect a small party favor. Sometimes people would trade their prizes. Just a little bit of fun is all it was.

Damn I never heard of that tradition

Now that we're just past Christmas, you can probably pick them up for dirt cheap and save them for next year. They're just a nice little touch when hosting people for a Christmas party.
