They used to be brick, at least downtowns were. One advantage of asphalt: harder to tear up to use for civil unrest. Bricks and cobblestones, much easier.

Good point. However I do seem to remember stories of pallets of bricks being dropped off during the BLM's summer of love.

Lol, you are absolutely correct, I got into an epic fight right next to Charles bridge a while ago against 2 guys, the big one was going toe-to-toe with me while his buddy was picking up these giant cobblestones (the street was under re-construction) so not only did I have to kick the guy's ass in front of me (I did decisively) but I had to dodge giant rocks at the same time.

Fun times.
