Yep, the "hole" basically coincided with their ability to measure it. It's cyclical (solar cycles) and totally natural.
In sure it didn't have anything to do with the patent on R12 expiring which meant that DuPont would soon face lots of cheap competitors, so they got it banned and replaced with expensive and inefficient alternative.
