Depends on the field that you are working in, in the print design world my most inspirational mentor was a fag. I later took over his job and surpassed him but he was mighty skilled in what he did.
Smart guy but even though I respected him professionally I couldn't get the picture of him being fucked in the ass by his one night stands out of my mind. My problem, not his but at work he was excellent.
