It has copy right attached to it. Media "owners" can't make money without copyright because you don't own it if everyone owns it. Ignoring tube sites for a bit, people pay for it instead of torrent it because it's worth it to them to not deal with the rather small risk of torrenting it. Adding tube sites back into the mix, the flow of money still depends on ownership because what's to stop a site from distributing the full films with zero ads for free, and delivering it for free over something like ipfs, thus undercutting companies like pornhub? Because the site owner would run the risk of getting in trouble with the law for distributing it without permission. Thus these sites have licensing costs and thus need ads.

The point is demand in media doesn't work the same as for physical goods without the government getting involved. The ever so slight risk applied to non-paying parties and distributors is what makes companies like Disney money. Media doesn't make money without blood. True of news too, but they produce blood a different way. They just lie to people until it causes death and destruction, and get paid for the associated fluff and hit pieces. Either way, you cannot make money off of media honestly and usually thanks to the government being involved.
