I'm hoping Musk will be successful in establishing a colony off planet where humanity can establish a foothold. Hopefully there will be a litmus test for living there.

That's been a plot line in any number of science fiction books I've read. In one (I can't remember which, though) descendants of some of the people who left Earth came back and those who had been left behind were like, "On no. You don't get to come back and fuck up the planet again after we just got done fixing things."
